1613 London, England

The original Globe Theatre on the south bank burns to the ground during the first performance of Shakespeare's Henry VIII, when the King enters Cardinal Wolsey's palace, and a cannon goes off and a spark ignites the thatched roof ; the Globe is rebuilt within a year, this time with a tiled roof, but that building will be demolished 30 years later when the Puritans close all English theatres; Shakespeare himself was part-owner of the Globe, built in 1599, and an actor in its productions; plays were previously performed in barns, town squares, mansions of nobles, and colleges and towns; the Globe Theatre accomodated 3,000 people, the wealthy sitting in timber-framed galleries for 3 or 4 pennies, while the poor paid 1 penny (almost an entire days wages) to stand in the central pit which was open to the sky; it raised a flag to inform London citizens that a play was to be performed at 2 pm that day. A replica of the original Globe Theatre, complete with thatched roof, and two giant pillars formed from green oak, was opened on Bankside in 1997. [pictures: model of original Globe; new replica]

1855 London, England

Arthur Sleigh publishes the first issue of The Daily Telegraph newspaper in London; London's first daily paper founded to air a personal grievance against the Duke of Cumberland; three months later, he sold it to Joseph Levy, proprietor of the Sunday Times, who relaunched it as a penny paper; Levy's son, Edward Levy-Lawson (later Lord Burnham) copied the approach of James Gordon Bennett, owner of the New York Herald, in reporting sensational stories with headlines such as "Extraordinary Discovery of Man-Woman in Birmingham" and "Shocking Occurrence - Five Men Smothered in a Gin Vat." He also joined with Bennett in financing Stanley's search for David Livingstone in Africa. Today's Daily Telegraph is owned by Hollinger Inc.

1955 New York City

Bill Haley and His Comets reach the top of the pop music charts with Rock Around the Clock, featured in Blackboard Jungle, a film about juvenile delinquents; the single stays in the top spot for 7 weeks and will sell 16 million copies; it was also the first to sell oone million copies in Britain; many consider the hit song the first rock 'n' roll single.

1967 Biloxi, Mississippi

B movie actress Jayne Mansfield (Vera Jayne Palmer) and her lawyer Sam Brody are decapitated in a car crash at 2 am near New Orleans while travelling to New Orleans for a talk show the next day; Sam ran the convertible into the back of a mosquito abatement truck that was spraying over the road; her three children were not seriously injured in the back seat.

1980 Iceland

Vigdis Finnbogadotir elected Iceland's President; Europe's first democratically elected woman Head of State; she was born April 15, 1930 in Reykjavik; her father was a civil engineer and professor at the University of Iceland, and her mother headed the Icelandic Nurses Association for 36 years; Finnbogadottir served as director of the Reykjavik Theatre Company from 1972 to 1980, taught French drama at the University of Iceland and worked for Iceland State Television, giving French lessons and introducing theatre in a popular cultural series; in 1976, she became a member of the Advisory Committee on Cultural Affairs of the Nordic Council, and charied the body from 1978.
