Eton College opens with first students; founded
by William Waynflete, Master of Winchester College and later Bishop of Winchester,
under the patronage of Henry VI, the Scholar King, who also founded King's
College, Cambridge; Eton was originally called The College of the Blessed
Mary of Eaton beside Windsor; Waynflete brought with him fellows and 35 scholars
from his other college at Winchester, founded 50 years earlier; 1443 the
College is formally opened on Dec. 21; the buildings are completed in 1523.
Eton is perhaps best defined in the Duke of Wellington's comment, that "The
Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton."
Soviet authorities, claiming "Technical
difficulties," halt all traffic by land and by water into or out of the western-controlled
section of Berlin at midnight on June 23. The only remaining access routes
into the city are three 20 mile-wide air corridors across the Russian zone
of Germany; two days later, on June 26, USAF C-47s carry the first 80 tons
of food into Berlin; for the next 11 months the Western powers will sustain
Berlin's 2.5 million residents in Operation Vittles, as the Berlin Airlift
after is unofficially named. Airlift aircraft used three airfields within
Berlin: Tempelhof in the US sector, Gatow in the British sector, and Tegel,
built in the French sector in only 60 days using volunteer German men and
women laborers. Three SAC bomb groups are also sent to Europe, placing Soviet
targets well within B-29 range. The crisis ends when the Soviets reopen land
and water routes at midnight on May 12, 1949, but the airlift continues until
September 30 to build a backlog of supplies. By the mission's end, 342 planes
had made 277,000 flights carrying 2.5 million tons of necessities into Berlin. [picture: flight control parameters]
