Christopher Wren begins work on a new St.
Paul's Cathedral, to replace the old one destroyed nine years earlier in
the Great Fire of 1666; will take 35 years to build; the dome is the second
largest ever built (the largest being St. Peter's Basilica in Rome); Wren
also designed 52 other London churches, as well as the Royal Exchange, College
of Physicians, Chelsea Hospital, the Royal Naval College, Custom House and
the Drury Lane Theatre; when he died in 1723 he became the first person to
be buried in St. Paul's Cathedral.
