1829 London, England

Sir Robert Peel founds the London Metropolitan Police; originally known as Peelers, the police still are called bobbies, after Sir Robert.

1846 Hoboken, New Jersey

First organized baseball game played between the New York Baseball Club and the Knickerbocker Club; The New York Nine won 23 to 1; game was only four innings long; the rules of baseball had been formulated only one year earlier by Alexander Cartwright, Jr.

1848 Seneca Falls, New York

1910 Spokane Washington

Father's Day was celebrated for the first time; initiated by Mrs. John (Sonora) Dodd, who had been raised by her father William Smart, a Civil War veteran, after her mother died in childbirth with their sixth child; chose her father's birthday as the date for the new holiday. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day, and in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.

1941 Minneapolis, Minnestoa

General Mills invents Cheerios cereal, first called Cheerioats; today the #2 selling cereal in the US, after Frosted Flakes, and before Corn Flakes, with 3.7 percent of the cereal market and an advertising budget of $23.6 million.

1947 Chicago, Illinois

Preston Tucker unveils his advanced rear engined Tucker automobile in Chicago; a car-crazy kid as a boy, Tucker hung around auto speedways and grew up to create a car that was years ahead of its time; unfortunately he was only able to produce 51 vehicles before being forced out of business; the Tucker had a center headlight that turned with the steering wheel, pop-up tail lights and irregularly shaped windows.

1953 Ossining, New York

Julius and Ethel Rosenberg executed at Sing Sing Prison for atomic espionage after the Supreme Court vacated a stay granted by Justice William O. Douglas and President Eisenhower refused to intervene; first US civilians executed for espionage; convicted of passing U.S. atomic secrets to the Soviet Union.

1978 USA

Cartoonist Jim Davis premieres his comic strip Garfield in 41 US newspapers; born in the kitchen of an Italian restaurant, Garfield's favorite food is lasagna; now appears to over 220 million readers in over 2500 newspapers worldwide.
