Milestones for June 18

1178 Canterbury, England

Five Canterbury monks report an explosion on moon; the only known observation of this event; has been proposed that this was the origin of the lunar crater Giordano Bruno.

1815 Waterloo, Belgium

Napoleon Bonaparte defeated at the Battle of Waterloo by a joint British, German and Dutch force under the command of the Duke of Wellington and General Gebhard von Blucher; battle began at 11 am, when 74,000 French troops attacked a smaller number of allied soldiers under the Duke of Wellington at the fortified farm of Hougoumont, followed by an infantry assault on the Allies' main line; both were beaten back, and a counter-charge of the British cavalry was stopped by French artillery; Marshal Ney's French cavalry then attacked, charging time and again but faring no better against Allied infantry and artillery; French infantry captured the fortified farm of La Haie-Sainte, clearing the way for a strike at the Allied centre, but the fields were muddy due to heavy rains, making it hard for Napoleon's troops to score a quick victory; at 1 pm, 90,000 Prussian troops arrived to fortify the Allies; Napoleon threw his elite Old Guard forward in a final effort to break Wellington's line, but they held firm and drove the Old Guard back with a storm of musketry, cannon balls and grape-shot; a general advance turned the French defeat into a rout, with Napoleon himself barely escaping, ending his 100 days of glory after his return from Elba in February; will abdicate on June 22 and exiled to St. Helena in the South Atlantic.

1979 Vienna, Austria

US President Jimmy Carter and Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev sign the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT) 2 Treaty in Vienna.

1983 Cape Canaveral, Florida

Dr. Sally Ride becomes the first American woman in space, starting her ride aboard the space shuttle Challenger for a six-day voyage; served as flight engineer and, along with the four male astronauts onboard, deployed several satellites; was selected as an astronaut in 1978, the year she received her PhD in astrophysics.
