Mount Pinatubo, 100 km northwest of Manila, blows
its stack at 2 am, sending plumes of ash nearly 40 km into the stratosphere,
and affecting weather patterns for at least 18 months; the Pinatubo eruption
is the world's worst volcanic activity in 80 years, and the 20 million tons
of sulfur dioxide it emits will slightly cool the earth for several years; the eruption blasts
a crater 2 km in diameter on the north side of the summit dome, and
ashflow deposits cover about 100 square km of the area around the volcano;
quick deployment of monitoring instruments and warnings led to the evacuation
of over 58,000 residents near the volcano, including 14,500 US military personnel
from Clark Air Base. Estimates of the bulk volume of ejecta range from 7
to 11 cubic km.
