1373 London, England

Signing of the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty of Alliance, the world's oldest existing signed treaty, in London.

1825 New York City

Walter Hunt of New York patents his invention, the safety pin, to pay off a $15 debt; it took him 3 hours to make a sketch of his idea, to which he sold the rights for $400.

1893 Royal Lytham, England

World's first women's golf tournament held at the Royal Lytham course.

1900 Beijing China

Beginning of the Boxer Rebellion, with an attack on foreign diplomats and businessmen; 1899 saw the founding of the secret society, the "Fists of Righteous Harmony", dedicated to ending the domination of China by foreigners, since several European states were claiming exclusive trading rights with individual provinces, some even going so far as to lay claim to the province itself; Westerners called them "Boxers" because they practiced martial arts which Boxers believed made them impervious to Western bullets; a few days later the Chinese Empress ordered all foreigners killed, but by August an international army arrived and put the Boxer Rebellion down, and in 1901 a treaty was signed.

1912 Jefferson, Missouri

Captain Albert Berry makes the first successful parachute jump from an airplane.

1942 Peenemunde, Germany

Germans make first successful launch of their V-2 rocket; reaches altitude of 1.3 km; also on this day in 1944, the first of Germany's V-1 (Fieseler Fi-103) flying buzz-bombs is unleashed on southern England.

1966 Washington DC

US Supreme Court hands down the Miranda decision 5-4; suspect held for questioning must be informed of rights, and individuals under arrest can remain silent because "...anything you say, can and will be used against you in a court of law"; Miranda vs. Arizona decision held that the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution of the United States "required warnings before valid statements could be taken by police."

1983 Space

NASA spacecraft Pioneer 10 crosses the orbit of Neptune and becomes the first manmade object to leave the solar system; the space probe was launched on March 2, 1972.

1990 Berlin, Germany

East Germany begins the final demolition of the Berlin Wall, knocking out concrete slabs all over the city to re-open streets sealed off since the Cold War barrier was built in 1961.
