Milestones for June 3

1937 Monts, France

The Duke of Windsor, who had abdicated as King Edward VIII of England, marries Wallis Simpson at the Chateau de Conde after her divorce becomes final. The couple live in France until the outbreak of World War II, then move to the Bahamas after Edward accepts the governorship offered by Winston Churchill.

  

1965 Space

Launch of Gemini 4, the first multi day mission by an American crew; second US 2-man flight (McDivitt & White). Major Edward White the first US astronaut to perform an Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) or spacewalk, when he stepped outside his Gemini 4 spacecraft, propelled by a Personal Propulsion Unit (PPU), also called a Hand-Held Maneuvering Unit (HHMU) which worked on compressed oxygen; remained outside for 20 minutes tethered to the Gemini 4 spacecraft by a 25-foot life support umbilical line, which contained an oxygen supply hose, bioinstrumentation wires and a support tether; mission lasted 4 days, and was the first long-duration NASA space flight; first US manned space mission controlled from NASA Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. White died Jan. 27, 1967 in the Apollo 204 fire at Cape Kennedy.

  

1973 Goussainville, France

Pilot Mikhail Kozlov crashes the Soviet supersonic airliner Tupolev 144 before 200,000 aviation fans at the Paris Air Show, killing 15 people; on the last day of the air show, the Anglo-French Concorde made a magnificent flyby, performing like a jet fighter, but when Kozlov tried to outperform the Concorde (or tried to avoid a collision course with a Mirage fighter), and pulled up into a steep climb, the G load caused the left canard wing to break clean away and smash into the wing root behind it, repturing the fuel tank, which exploded, sending the plane diving straight into the ground. 1979 Mexico

Marine blow-out beneath the exploratory drilling rig Ixtoc 1 in the Gulf of Mexico spills an estimated 140 million gallons of crude oil into the open sea; although it is the largest known oil spill, it had a low environmental impact.

  

1989 Beijing, China

Showdown in Beijing begins as Chinese Troops get orders to reclaim Tiananmen Square at all costs, and start to move tanks and armored personnel carriers toward the center of the city; 10:00 pm, soldiers open fire on people who try to block the army's advance, as well as on bystanders shouting at the troops. The pro-democracy protest began on April 15 when former Party General Secretary Hu Yaobang, deposed in 1987, died of a heart attack; April 21 100,000 students gathered in Tiananmen Square to commemorate Hu and voice their discontents; ignored by Premier Li Peng, students began boycotting classes; April 27 students from over 40 universities marched to Tiananmen; May 13 hundreds started a hunger strike; May 15 Mihkail Gorbachev arrived in Beijing for the first Sino-Soviet summit since 1959; May 18 Li Peng summoned several student leaders for a TV talk at the Great Hall of the People; nothing was achieved; May 19 plan to declare martial law leaked to student leaders, who called off the hunger strike and declared a mass sit-in; May 20 martial law declared in Beijing, but the army's advance towards the city is blocked by large numbers of students and citizens; May 23 troops pulled back to the outskirts of Beijing; May 27 ultimatum to end occupation of the Square; May 30 Goddess of Democracy statue unveiled.
