John Gay 1685-1732

born in Barnstaple, Devon; died in London Dec. 4, 1732; poet, dramatist; founder with Swift and Pope of the group of Tory satirists called the Scriblerians; best known for his popular musical The Beggar's Opera, a parody of the Italian opera of the day, that featured elaborate stories about fairy sprites and the gods, Gay wrote a libretto in English about London's criminal lowlifers and highwaymen, and used it to satirize contemporary genteel society, and the Prime Minister, Robert Walpole; his sequel, Polly, written the following year, was suppressed by Sir Robert Walpole since it ridiculed his government.

Willie Sutton 1901-1980

born in Brooklyn, New York; died in Spring Hill, Florida Nov. 2, 1980; bank robber, aka The Actor because of the disguises and rented uniforms he used in his robberies; started a life of crime at age 9, and learned at the feet of "Doc" Tate, an expert safecracker; also learned the secrets of makeup from the chorus girls he hung around with; robbed roughly 100 banks over a career spanning from the late 1920s to his final arrest in 1952, with a number of prison terms in between; 1952 wrote the story of his life of crime called I, Willie Sutton, followed in 1976 by Where the Money Was: The Memoirs of a Bank Robber; also made a TV commercial for New Britain Bank and Trust Co. in Connecticut, promoting the bank's credit card by saying, "Now when I say I'm Willie Sutton, people believe me." Sutton is best known for his quip when asked by a reporter why he robbed banks, "because that's where the money is." The medical profession has coined a term called "Sutton's Law," which means looking for the obvious, before going further afield, when diagnosing.

Harry Blackstone Jr 1934-1997

born Harry Boughton in Colon, Michigan; died May 14, 1997; magician; career in magic started at the age of six months, appearing and disappearing in his father's show; learned such illusions as The Floating Light Bulb, The Vanishing Birdcage, The Dancing Handkerchief, and the frightening Buzzsaw; 1980 after setting box office records in 16 US cities, he opened his show at the Majestic Theater on Broadway; became the longest running magic and illusion show in the history of the New York theater; 1991 hosted the International Magic Awards, a 2-hour TV special originating in five countries on three continents and seen by half a billion people; also played Dr. Mephisto on the NBC-TV daytime soap Santa Barbara and produced the Broadway show Hair; has co-authored three books (The Blackstone Book of Magic and Illusion, There's One born Every Minute and My Life As A Magician ) and re-edited his father's Blackstone's Secrets of Magic.

Robert Ballard 1942-

explorer, geologist, author; grew up in southern California, where he collected sea shells studied the sea creatures that lived in tidal pools and took up scuba diving; as a boy, his favorite book was Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Seaand; BA in geology and chemistry from the University of California; postgraduate work in marine geology at the University of Hawaii; worked as a trainer at a nearby marine park, teaching dolphins to dive through hoops and perform tricks; University of Rhode Island PhD in marine geophysics on the controversial subject of plate tectonics; 1967 entered the US Navy and was assigned to the Deep Submergence Laboratory at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, Massachusetts; Senior Scientist there until 1997; 1973-74, explored the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a huge underwater mountain range in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, in the Alvin, a small, three-person submarine; 1977 near the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador, he and his crew discovered giant worms, some over 2.5 m long, living inside white tubes and clustered around underwater hot springs; 979 found underwater volcanoes he called black smokers off the coast of Baja California; 1985 discovered the wreck of the R.M.S. Titanic off Newfoundland; he and his colleagues designed a robot, the Jason Jr., to enter the Titanic and photograph its interior; 1989 built the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Jason, equipped with floodlights, TV cameras, and a sample-retrieving mechanism, and tethered to the mother ship by optical cable,; took 200,000 students by telepresence to the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, where they saw underwater volcanoes, artifacts, and the remains of ancient trading vessels; 1990, year two of the JASON Project, explored the wrecks of the Hamilton and Scourge, armed schooners that sank in Lake Ontario during the War of 1812; founding chairman of the Jason Foundation for Education; has mounted recent expeditions to the wrecks of the Lusitania, the Bismarck and the sunken aircraft carriers of World War II's Battle of Midway; found the U.S.S. Yorktown, sunk in 1942, lying 5,075 metres underwater on May 19, 1998.

Mike Tyson 1966-

born in Brooklyn, New York; boxer; trained by Constantine "Cus" D'Amato in the Catskill Mountains; after an amateur record of 24-3, turned pro on March 6, 1985, scoring a first-round knockout of Hector Mercedes and finishing his first year with a record of 15-0, with 15 knockouts; after racking up 27 consecutive wins, signed to fight Trevor Berbick for the World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight title; Nov. 26, 1986, beat Berbick in less than six minutes, becoming heavyweight champion at the unprecedented age of 20; March 7, 1987 took a 12 round victory over James "Bonecrusher" Smith to win the World Boxing Association (WBA) belt; Aug. 1, 1987 out-pointed Tony Tucker to claim the International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt; youngest heavyweight boxing champ in history, and the world's first undisputed heavyweight champion since Muhammad Ali a decade earlier; Feb. 11, 1990 lost title to Buster Douglas in Tokyo; 1991 convicted of rape by an Indianapolis jury and sentenced to six years in prison; released March 25, 1995 on good behaviour; 1995 beat USBA heavyweight champion Buster Mathis Jr., and regained his WBC and IBF champion belts, but could not outlast his nemesis Evander Holyfield in 11 rounds in Las Vegas on Nov. 9, 1996. On June 28, 1997, he is disqualified after he bits a large portion of Evander Holyfield's ear off; later is banned from boxing and fined $3 million for the incident. In 2002 he is defeated in a comeback attempt by Lennox Lewis.
