Czar's Minister of Communications, then Minister of Finance (1892-1903);
brought in an alcohol monopoly in 1895 and the gold rouble in 1897; reformed
finances, encouraged the development of Russian industries with the help
of foreign capital, and opened up Siberia to large-scale colonization with
the building of the Trans-Siberian Railroad; 1905 served as first constitutional
Prime Minister of the Russian Empire after the revolution of 1905; signed
the peace treaty with Japan at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and acted as chief
initiator of the Manifesto of 17 October, by which Nicholas II promised more
liberal government; attacked by conservative forces, he resigned April 1906
and wrote his 3 volumes of Memoirs.
Robert Schuman 1886-1963
born in Luxembourg; died in Metz, France
Sept. 4, 1963; statesman, EC pioneer; founder of the European Coal and Steel
Community, he promoted European economic and political unity and the concept
of a "United States of Europe."

Antoine de Saint-Exupery 1900-1944
born at Lyon, France; shot down
over the Mediterranean July 31, 1944; soldier, aviator, author; entered the
École des Beaux-Arts to study architecture; 1921 started his military
service, and was sent to Strasbourgh for training as a pilot; July 9, 1921
made his first solo flight in a Sopwith F-CTEE; 1922 got his pilot's licence;
1926 published his first story, 'L'Aviateur' in the literary magazine Le
Navire d'argent; 1926 got a job flying the mails for the commercial airline
company Aéropostale; 1928 director of the remote Cap Juby airfield
in Rio de Oro, Sahara; 1929 moved to South America, flying post through the
Andes, surviving many crashes and adventures; novels include Southern Mail
(1929), Night Flight (1933, made into a film starring Clark Gable, Helen
Hayes and Lionel Barrymore), and a nonfiction book, Wind, Sand, and Stars
(1939); 1940 escaped to the US after the Nazis invaded France; 1943 wrote
The Little Prince, about a pilot who crashes in the Sahara and makes the
acquaintance of a little prince from another planet.

Anne-Sophie Mutter 1963-
born in Rheinfeldin, Germany; violinist;
started career at age 13 when she appeared as soloist with Herbert von Karajan
and the Berlin Philharmonic at the 1977 Salzburg Whitsun Festival; best known
for her Mendelssohn and Bruch Concertos and Vivaldi's Four Seasons with von
Karajan, Carmen-Fantasie with James Levine, Brahms Violin Concerto and Schumann
Fantasy with the New York Philharmonic and Kurt Masur, and the Penderecki
Violin Concerto No. 2 with the London Symphony Orchestra; January 1998 embarked
on devoting the whole of 1998 to performing the cycle of ten Beethoven Sonatas
for piano and violin in 50 cities world-wide with pianist Lambert Orkis;
1999 won Grammy Awards for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance and Best
Composition; her year 2000 project is a festival devoted to 20th century
violin literature; will open in New York with recitals at Carnegie Hall and
orchestral concerts at Avery Fisher Hall with Kurt Masur and the New York
Philharmonic.
