Giuseppe Mazzini 1805-1872

born in Genoa, Italy; died in Pisa March 10, 1872; liberal patriot, writer, political agitator; 1821 became a revolutionary at age 16 after the failed Piedmont rebellion when he was shocked by the penniless rebels passing through Genoa on their way to exile; inspired by their devotion to their cause, he dressed in black for the rest of his life in mourning for them; 1822-27 studied law but grew bored; 1827 joined the Carbonari, a patriotic secret society, and was arrested and jailed; 1832 fled to Marseilles and founded the secret revolutionary society Young Italy to champion the movement for Italian unity known as the Risorgimento; 1837 exiled to London, where he wrote propaganda for the movement; 1848 returned to Italy during the Lombard Revolt and served as one of three triumvirs in the Roman republic of 1849 before it was overthrown by the French; 1853 organized an unsuccessful uprising in Milan; 1860 supported Garibaldi's expedition to Sicily but, unlike Garibaldi, remained an uncompromising republican; refused to participate in the parliamentary government of the new Kingdom of Italy.

  

Rider Haggard 1856-1925

born in Bradenham, Norfolk, his father a barrister and country squire, his mother an amateur writer; died in London May 14, 1925; civil servant, author of over 40 books; 1875 failed the army entrance exam and went to Natal as secretary to Sir Henry Bulwer, Governor of Natal; 1877 served on the staff of Theophilus Shepstone, special commissioner to the Transvaal; had an affair with a Zulu woman; 1879 returned to England to marry, and took his wife to Transvaal to run an ostrich farm, but went back to England when the province was ceded to the Dutch; became a barrister of Lincoln's Inn and started writing adventure novels; his first two, Dawn and The Witch's Head were not popular, but in 1885 he published his best selling King Solomon's Mines, about explorer Allan Quatermain who takes Sir Henry Curtis on an expedition deep into Africa to find Sir Henry's brother. They find both the brother and the legendary diamond mines of King Solomon, then make off with some diamonds and return home to split the treasure; sequels include Jess, Alan Quartermaine and She (1887), about an adventurer, Leo Vincey, who goes to Africa to avenge the death of an ancestor, Kallikrates an Egyptian priest slain by an ancient sorceress She-Who-Must-Be Obeyed, queen Ayesha. She saves Leo's life and finds a mysterious bond between him and Kallikrates. Aysha enters the Fire of Life at the heart of an volcano, and emerges from it immeasurably old. She dies and asks Leo to remember her in her eternal youth and beauty.

  

Billy Wilder 1906-

born Samuel Wilder in Sucha, Poland [then part of Austria]; film director, producer; nicknamed Billy by his mother, who had seen the Buffalo Bill Wild West show as a teenager during a stay in the US; starting writing career as a reporter in Vienna; 1927 left for Berlin at age 21 to work as a script ghostwriter; 1933 fled to France from the Nazis, then came to work in Hollywood, starting off as a screenwriter; found a mentor in director Ernst Lubitsch; 1942 directed his first picture, The Major and the Minor, starring Ginger Rogers and Ray Milland; other films include Double Indemnity (1944), The Lost Weekend (1945 Academy Award), Sunset Boulevard (1950), Stalag 17 (1953), Sabrina (1954), The Seven Year Itch (1955), Love in the Afternoon (1957), Witness for the Prosecution (1957), Some Like it Hot (1959), The Apartment (1960 three Academy Awards), Irma La Douce (1963), The Fortune Cookie (1966), The Front Page (1974) and Buddy Buddy (1981); received eight Best Director nominations, second only to William Wyler who had twelve; also nominated twelve times for Best Screenplay awards, and won three. Quote: "People copy, people steal. Most of the pictures they make nowadays are loaded down with special effects. I couldn't do that. I quit smoking because I couldn't reload my Zippo."


Ann Morrow Lindbergh 1906-

born in Englewood, New Jersey; aviator, author; served as co-pilot and navigator for her husband, Charles Lindbergh; her twenty-month old son was kidnapped and murdered in 1932; best known for North to the Orient (1935), about flying over Canada and Kamchatka to pioneer routes to Asia; and Gift from the Sea (1955), eight autobiographical essays inspired by different kinds of seashells

Kris Kristofferson 1936-

born in Brownsville, Texas; singer, songwriter and actor; best known for songs Me and Bobby McGee, first recorded by Roger Miller, and a million-seller by Janis Joplin in 1971; also Help Me Make It Through the Night, recorded by Sammi Smith; personal singles include The Silver-Tongued Devil and I (1972), For the Good Times, Loving Her was Easier, and Why Me, and the albums The Silver-Tongued Devil and I and Jesus Was a Capricorn; 1985 recorded the Highwayman single and album with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson; films include A Star is Born, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

Cyndi Lauper 1953-

born Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper Thornton in Brooklyn, New York; rock singer; in the mid-s1970s performed as a vocalist with various cover bands in New York; 1977 extensively damaged her vocal cords, leaving her virtually voiceless for a year; 1983 signed with Portrait Records as a solo artist and released the album She's So Unusual, which sold over 4.5 million copies in the US, and won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1984; first female artist to score four Top Five singles from a debut album: Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Time After Time, She Bop and All Through The Night; other singles include True Colors from the album of the same name, released in 1986; othe ralbums are A Night To Remember (1989), Hat Full Of Stars (1991), Twelve Deadly Cyns (1994) and Sisters Of Avalon (1997); has played in Mad About You, and Life with Mikey.
