born Jakob Eberst in Cologne, Germany,
the son of a Jewish cantor; died there Oct. 5, 1880; composer best known
for his light burlesque comic operas known as opérettes; 1833 entered
the Paris Conservatory to study cello, but dropped out to perform at L'Opéra
Comique; later conducted at Théâtre Français; 1855 founded
his own theatre company, les Bouffes-Parisiens; best known works include
Orpheus in the Underworld (1858), La Belle Helene (1864), La Vie Parisienne
(1866), La Grande-duchesse de Gerolstein (1867) and La Perichole (1868),
and his single serious opera, Tales of Hoffman, which premiered three months
after his death.
Frederick Hopkins 1861-1947
born in Eastbourne, East Sussex; died
in Cambridge May 16, 1947; biochemist, winner, with Christiaan Eijkman of
the 1929 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of vitamins
- then called essential nutrient factors that animals need to stay healthy.
Jean Moulin 1899-1943
born in Béziers, Francel; tortured to
death by Clus Barbie's Gestapo in Lyons, France July 8, 1943; civil servant,
leader of the Résistance during World War II; captured at Caluire
June 21 1943; it has recently been discovered that he was betrayed by Lydie
Bastien, the lover of one of his close associates Rene Hardy, who was paid
in diamonds and gems stolen from French Jews.

Errol Flynn 1909-1959
born Leslie Thomson in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia;
died in Vancouver, BC Oct. 14, 1959; film actor, swashbuckler; got started
in movies with In the Wake of the Bounty (1933), partly filmed in Australia;
best known for his films Captain Blood (1935), The Adventures of Robin Hood
(1938), The Charge of the Light Brigade (1938), The Private Lives of Elizabeth
and Essex (1939), The Sea Hawk (1940), and The Master of Ballantrae (1953);
also played a middle-aged Ernest Hemingway character in The Sun Also Rises
(1957), and portrayed the actor John Barrymore in Too Much Too Soon (1958);
wrote an autobiography, My Wicked, Wicked Ways (1959); became a US citizen

Brian Wilson 1942-
born in Hawthorne, California; bass player, lead
singer (falsetto) and main songwriter for the Beach Boys; as a teen, he learned
to pick apart complex jazz chordings; taught harmony to his younger brothers
Dennis and Carl and cousin Mike Love and together they created the Beach
Boys; between Oct. 1962 and May 1966, he composed, arranged and produced
music for 12 albums - Surfin' Safari, Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, Little Deuce
Coupe, Shut Down Volume Two, All Summer Long, The Beach Boys' Christmas Album,
Beach Boys' Concert, The Beach Boys Today, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!),
Beach Boys' Party and Pet Sounds; hit singles include Surfin' Safari, Surfin'
USA, I Get Around, Fun, Fun, Fun, Help Me, Rhonda, California Girls, In My
Room, Don't Worry Baby, Good Vibrations and Wouldn't It Be Nice?; the group
have sold over 65 million records worldwide; 1970 became a recluse due to
substance abuse; 1988 inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and released
