Margaret Tudor; died at Theobalds, Hertfordshire March 27, 1625; 1567 ascended
the Scottish throne as James VI after his mother was forced to abdicate because
of her indiscretions and Catholic faith, but Scotland was ruled by a regent
until he came of age; 1589 married Anne of Denmark, who bore him three sons
and four daughters; 1603 ascended the English throne after being named successor
by his cousin, Elizabeth I; as first Stuart king of England, he styled himself
"King of Great Britain"; constantly at odds with Parliament due to extravagant
spending; awarded over 200 peerages (landed titles) as bribes designed to
win loyalty, the most controversial of which was his creation of George Villiers
(his closest advisor and homosexual partner) as Duke of Buckingham; tried

Spanish Infanta, and by executing Sir Walter Raleigh; known for his Authorized
Version of the Bible, printed in English in 1611.

in Paris Aug. 19, 1662; scientist, philosopher; educated at home by his father,
a tax collector, and taken to scientific meetings as a boy; his father would
not let him study mathematics until age 15, but at 12 years old he discovered
that the sum of the angles of a triangle equal two right angles; when his
father found out, he relented and gave him a copy of Euclid; his studies
of hydrostatic and atmospheric pressure led him to invent the syringe and
the hydraulic press; 1642-45 built a mechanical adding machine called the
Pascaline, the world's first digital calculator, to help his father with
tax collecting; 1647 wrote New Experiments Concerning Vacuums, and observed
that the pressure of the atmosphere decreases with height and that a vacuum
must exist above the atmosphere; 1648 wrote The Generation of Conic Sections,
pioneering projective geometry, calculus and probability theory; wrote a
Treatise on the Arithmetical Triangle, now called the Pascal Triangle; 1653
wrote Treatise on the Equilibrium of Liquids, with Pascal's law of pressure,
a complete outline of a system of hydrostatics, the first in the history
of science; October 1654 nearly lost his life in an accident when the horses
pulling his carriage bolted and the carriage was left hanging over a bridge
above the river Seine; pledged his life to Christianity and visited the Jansenist
monastery Port-Royal des Champs; 1656-57 published anonymous works on religious
topics, including his eighteen Provincial Letters; 1656-58 wrote his Pensées,
a collection of personal thoughts on human suffering and faith in God; contains
'Pascal's wager' which claims to prove that belief in God is rational with
the following argument : "If God does not exist, one will lose nothing by
believing in him, while if he does exist, one will lose everything by not
believing."

he fought the First Battle of the Somme from July to November 1916, advanced
