Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh 1769-1822

born in Dublin, son of the Marquess of Londonderry; died by his own hand in London Aug. 12, 1822; 1790 entered the Irish Parliament, and the British Parliament in 1794; 1798 acting chief secretary for Ireland at the time of the Irish rebellion; 1800 worked for the Act of Union of England and Ireland; 1801 resigned with William Pitt when George III refused to allow Catholic Emancipation; 1802-06 President of the India board of control; 1805-06, 1807-09 served as Secretary of War, planning the reorganization and expansion of the army; dispatched a British expedition to Portugal, and after the early disasters in the Peninsular War, put Arthur Wellesley (later Duke of Wellington) in command; 1809 fought a duel, and wounded his colleague George Canning, and both resigned; 1812-22 served as Foreign Secretary, helping to organize the Grand Alliance against Napoleon Bonaparte; advocated a moderate peace settlement for France, including restoration of the Bourbon monarchy and the limitation of France to her prewar boundaries; 1814-15 at the Congress of Vienna worked to establish the United Netherlands and the German Confederation.

  

James Montgomery Flagg 1877-1960

born at Pelham Manor, New York; died in New York City May 27, 1960; illustrator, poster artist, portrait painter; best known for his illustrations of buxom women and his World War I recruiting poster of a pointing Uncle Sam with the caption "I Want YOU for U.S. Army".

Sammy Cahn 1913-1993

born Samuel Cohen in New York City; died in Los Angeles, California Jan. 15, 1993; Tin Pan Alley songwriter; collaborating with such composers as Saul Chaplin, Jule Styne, and Jimmy Van Heusen, wrote songs that had 22 Academy Award nominations, won four Oscars and became number one hits for many performers, including Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, the Mills Brothers, Bing Crosby, The Andrews Sisters and Frank Sinatra; Academy Award-winning songs are Three Coins in the Fountain (1954), All the Way (1957), High Hopes (1959), and Call Me Irresponsible (1963); won an Emmy for Frank Sinatra's rendition of Love And Marriage, introduced in the 1955 TV musical Our Town; wrote movie scores for A Song to Remember, April in Paris, A Hole in the Head, Robin and the Seven Hoods; hit songs include Shoe Shine Boy, Bei Mir Bist Du Schon (Means That You're Grand), My Kind of Town, September of My Years, The Tender Trap, To Love and Be Loved, High Time, Where Love Has Gone, Thoroughly Modern Millie, A Pocketful of Miracles, Call Me Irresponsible, The Second Time Around, I'll Walk Alone, I Fall in Love Too Easily, Saturday Night Is the Loneliest Night in the Week, As Long as There's Music, Come Out, Come Out, Five Minutes More, and The Things We Did Last Summer; 1974 starred in the Broadway musical Words and Music, a revue featuring his own patter and songs. Allan Rex Sandage 1926-

born in Iowa City, Iowa; astronomer; he and radio astronomer Thomas A. Matthews were the first to discover the quasar, or quasi-stellar radio source, a starlike object that emits powerful radio waves.

  

Paul McCartney 1942-

born in Liverpool; rock musician, composer; played and wrote for The Quarrymen, The Moondogs, The Silver Beatles, The Beatles and Wings; 1956 started career at age 13 when he asked John Lennon if he could join Lennon's group, the Quarrymen, which evolved into the Beatles; had 49 hits, including She Loves You, I Want to Hold Your Hand, Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band; 1969 began a career on his own, just before the break-up of the Beatles, with a solo album which contained the hit single, Maybe I'm Amazed; his second album, Ram, had two major hits - Another Day and Uncle Albert-Admiral Halsey; 1971 formed the band Wings, which stayed together for ten years; had number-one hits with My Love (1973) and Silly Love Songs (1976); other hits include Let 'Em In, Live and Let Die, Band on the Run, Listen to What the Man Said; 1982 released a solo album, Tug of War, with guest performers such as Stevie Wonder, who sang with McCartney a hit duet, Ebony and Ivory; 1983 sang on Michael Jackson's hit single The Girl is Mine; 1990 won a Grammy Award; recently lost his wife Linda Eastman to breast cancer.
