Geronimo 1829-1909

born Goyathlay at at present-day Clifton, Arizona; died at Fort Sill, Oklahoma Feb 17, 1909; medicine man, leader of the Chiricahua band of the Mimbreno Apache tribe known as Goyathlay (One Who Yawns); admitted to the warriors' council at the young age of 17; 1858 while he was trading in town, a group of Mexican soldiers murdered his wife, children, and mother; from then on he hated all Mexicans and killed them whenever he could; Geronimo was a nickname given by the Mexicans; 1876 US government tried to move the Chiracahua from their traditional home to a reservation at San Carlos, New Mexico, but Geronimo fled with about 700 other Apaches; 1886 US General Cook finally captured Geronimo and forced a treaty to relocate the Chiracahua to Florida; Geronimo escaped but was again captured and sent to Florida then Oklahoma as a prisoner of war for almost thirty years.

  

Stan Laurel 1890-1965

born Arthur S Jefferson at Ulverston, Lancashire, England, son of a music-hall performer; died in Santa Monica, California Feb. 23, 1965; part of the Laurel and Hardy motion-picture comedy team; 1907 joined Fred Karno's troupe of slapstick comedians in Manchester, and polished his comic techniques in the Mumming Birds, where he understudied a young Charlie Chaplin in the role of an obstreperous drunk who repeatedly interrupts the other performers; 1910 first to the US in the Karno company's tour; 1917 followed Chaplin to Hollywood and made his first film, Nuts; 1926 first started working with Oliver 'Babe' Hardy at the Hal Roach Studios in the Hal Roach All-Stars; came to play the pompous oaf to simple-witted Stan, and together they made over 50 short comedies - mostly two-reelers, but sometimes three reels; 1933 the pair won an Academy Award for The Music Box.. Barbara McClintock 1902-1992

born at Hartford, Connecticut; died at Huntington, NY; cytogeneticist, discoverer of mobile genetic elements; studied in the College of Agriculture at Cornell University where she was the first to identify each of the 10 maize chromosomes; doctorate in 1927; at the University of Missouri, she started studying chromosomes that had been broken by X rays, and later devised a way to use these chromosomes to generate new mutations; continued her work at Carnegie Institution and in 1945 was elected President of the Genetics Society of America; 1983 awarded the for Physiology or Medicine for her discovery of transposable elements 35 years earlier; author of Jumping Genes.

Katharine Graham 1917-

born in New York City; owner and publisher of The Washington Post, Newsweek magazine, and other publications; won the Pulitzer Prize for biography for her book Personal History; 1963 took over the company after her husband's suicide; and said that her "credentials were pathetically thin"; 1972 publisher when her reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein broke the Watergate scandal.
