Edward The Black Prince 1330-1376

born at Woodstock, Oxfordshire; died at Westminster, London June 8, 1376; soldier, son and heir apparent of Edward III of England also known as the Prince d'Aquitaine, Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, and Earl of Chester; commander of English forces during the Hundred Years' War; 1346 won the Battle of Crecy at age 16 and at 26 the Battle of Poitiers (1356), when he captured the French King, John II the Good; 1363 became ruler of the newly created English principality of Aquitaine, and, with his wife Joan of Kent, maintained a brilliant court at Bordeaux; was given the name Black Prince by the French because of his black armour and the terror of his campaigns; 1370 after subduing a rebellion at Limoges, he had 3,000 of the inhabitants, men, women and children, slaughtered; outlived by his Father, Edward III, his son, Richard, became Richard II. It was the son of Edward's Brother, John, the Duke of Lancaster, who deposed Richard II and eventually became Henry IV.

Richard Grenville 1542-1591

born at Buckland Abbey, Devon; died off the Azores Sept 2, 1591; naval commander; he killed a man in a duel, was admitted a law student of the Inner Temple in 1559, elected a member of Parliament in 1563, and took part in the Emperor Maximilian II's campaign against the Turks in 1567; 1576 made sheriff of Cornwall; 1585 made the first of two voyages to Virginia to further the development of the Roanoke colony; 1588 contributed three ships to the fleet assembled at Plymouth under Lord Howard of Effingham to resist the Armada; 1591 appointed vice admiral and of a naval force under Lord Thomas Howard that was dispatched to the Azores to lie in wait for a homeward bound Spanish treasure fleet; sickness hit the ships companies, and his flagship the Revenge had to land over half her crew of 250; on 30 August his force was too weak to give battle when the Spanish fleet arrived, but bravely held them off for 15 hours; Grenvillewas mortally wounded, was taken on board the Spanish flagship San Pablo and died three days later.


Edvard Grieg 1843-1907

born in Bergen, Norway; died there Sept. 4, 1907; composer, founder of the Norwegian nationalist school of music; known as "The Voice of Norway" ; 1858 studied at the Leipzig Conservatory; best known for his 1865 Piano Sonata and the Sonata, op.8, for Violin and Piano; and his famous 1868 piece, the romantic Piano Concerto in A minor, which has become almost synonymous with Norway.

    

Erik H. Erikson 1902-1994

born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany to Danish parents; died in Harwich, Massachusetts May 12, 1994; psychoanalyst; 1933 moved to the US to teach at Harvard; 1950 published his Childhood and Society, in which he divided human development, from infancy to old age, into eight stages in the life cycle; author of two biographies, Young Man Luther (1958) and Gandhi's Truth on the Origins of Militant Nonviolence (1969), which won the Pulitzer Prize. In the Luther book, he coined the term "identity crisis" which he said "occurs in that period of life when each youth must forge for himself some central perspective and direction, some working unit, out of the effective remnants of his childhood and the hopes of his anticipated adulthood." Wilbert Vere Awdry 1911-1997

born at Romsey, Hampshire; died in Stroud, Gloucestershire March 21, 1997; clergyman, author, railway buff; 1943 made up the first stories about steam engines when his son Christopher was in quarantine with scarlet fever; 1945 published the first of his Thomas the Tank Engine series of children's books; 1972 wrote the last of his 26 stories about the mischievous locomotive; has sold over 50 million books and spawned some 500 products, including videos, toys, and clothing; 1979 published The Steam Railways of Great Britain.

  

Saul Steinberg 1914-1999

born Saul Jacobson in Ramnicu Sarat, Romania; died in New York City May 13; cartoonist, illustrator; trained in Milan as an architect, but fled Fascist Italy soon after earning his degree; during World War II, he worked for the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor of the CIA, and was assigned to draw hideous depictions of Hitler and Mussolini, that were dropped behind enemy lines and printed in a resistance newspaper; best known for his line drawings and doodlings, many of which have appeared on the cover of the New Yorker; 1978 The Whitney Museum of American Art paid tribute to him in a retrospective of 250 watercolors, drawings, collages, wooden assemblages, oil, and a few cartoons; drew 85 covers and 642 drawings for The New Yorker and published several books, including All in Line (1945), The Art of Living (1949, (The Labyrinth (1960) and The Inspector (1973).
