Harriet Beecher Stowe 1811-1896

born in Litchfield, Connecticut; died in Hartford July 1, 1896; writer, philanthropist, grew up in Cincinnati, across the Ohio River from Kentucky, a slave state; saw slaves on the run from their masters and learned about their lives on the plantations; 1850 she and her husband moved to Brunswick, Maine where she began writing Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly, the story of a kindly slave and his friendship with Little Eva St. Clare, the daughter of his master. Tom saves the girl's life and she asks her father to free all his slaves, but before he can do so he is killed, and Tom is eventually whipped to death; the novel first came out in serial form in a Washington anti-slavery paper, the National Era; dismissed by Southerners as sentimental rubbish from a Yankee preacher's wife, but in the North it sold 300,000 copies in its first year, and contributed so much to popular feeling against slavery that it is regarded as one of the causes of the American Civil War. Psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin proposed naming the condition after Alzheimer.
