John Roebling 1806-1869

born in Muhlhausen, Prussia; killed on an engineering project at Brooklyn Heights, New York July 22, 1869; civil engineer; 1826 graduated in engineering from the Royal Polytechnic Institute of Berlin; who invented wire rope and pioneered the design of steel suspension bridges; 1831 emigrated to the US and appointed a Pennsylvania state engineer, to survey and supervised the construction of canals, locks, and dams; 1841 invented twisted wire-rope cable to replace the nine-inch hemp rope used to draw barges along portage railways; 1844 built an inexpensive suspension aqueduct for the Pennsylvania Canal across the Allegheny River using wire cable; 1847 built his first wire rope suspension bridge across the Monongahela at Pittsburgh; 1848 built a factory in New Jersey to manufacture wire cable; 1850 built his spectacular suspension bridge across the gorge of the Niagara River; his wire rope also found a ready market in power transmisison and elevator cable; 1883 his Brooklyn Bridge completed under the direction of his eldest son, Washington Augustus.

David Gill 1843-1914

born in Aberdeen, Scotland, the son of a watchmaker; died in London, England Jan. 24, 1914; astronomer who followed his father into the business, but developed a passion for photography and astronomy; 1869 took his first photograph of the moon, and displayed it at a meeting of the Royal Astronomical Society in London; 1879-1907 Director of South Africa's Cape Observatory; first measured solar and stellar parallax, and found the distances of the Sun and other stars from Earth.


George Bush 1924-

born at Milton, Massachusetts; politician, businessman; 43rd US Vice President 1981-89; 41st President of the United States 1989-93; served as a Navy flier in World War II; played first base on the 1947 and 1948 Yale baseball teams that placed second in College World Series; captain of the 1948 team; also headed the CIA and was US Ambassador to China; major figure in reaching detente with the USSR and ending the Cold War. Anne Frank 1929-1945

born in Frankfurt am Main; died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, near Hannover, Germany March, 1945; 1933 her family fled Germany and settled in Amsterdam when Hitler came to power; 1940 Nazis invaded Holland; 1942 began deporting Dutch Jews to concentration camps; 1942 June 12 her parents gave her a red and white plaid diary, which she started writing in immediately; 1942 July she and her family went into hiding in an annex behind the offices on Prinsengracht Canal where her father had worked; 1944 Aug 1 her last diary entry; Aug 3 captured and sent to Bergen Belsen where she died of typhus a few weeks before the camp was liberated. The Nazis missed finding her diary, which was published in Dutch in 1947 as The House Behind; 1953 published in English as The Diary of a Young Girl.
