Headline Birthdays for June 10
Gustave Courbet 1819-1877
born at Ornans, France; died at La Tour-de-Peilz,
Switzerland Dec. 31, 1877; realist painter who rebelled against the Romantic
painting of his day; studied in Paris, learning chiefly by copying masterpieces
in the Louvre; best known works include Wounded Man (1847, in the picture, a self portrait), After Dinner
at Ornans (1849), Funeral at Ornans and The Stonebreakers (1850), The Artist's
Studio (1855); attacked by academic painters, he set up his own pavilion
where he exhibited 40 of his paintings and issued a manifesto on realism;
1873 fled to Switzerland, where he spent his few remaining years in poverty.
Nikolaus Otto 1832-1891
born at Holzhausen, Nassau, Germany; died
in Cologne Jan. 26, 1891; engineer; first developed the four-stroke internal-combustion
engine; the first practical alternative to the steam engine.
Immanuel Velikovsky 1895-1979
born in Vitebsk, Belarus; died in Princeton,
New Jersey Nov. 17, 1979; writer, proponent of theories of cosmogony and
history; a friend of Albert Einstein from the Prussian Scientific Academy
and a student of Freud; while researching a book linking Oedipus and the
Pharoah Akhnaton, he discovered legendary evidence of massive upheavals in
the past that he related to a final settling of the solar system into a stable
configuration; 1950 published his bestseller Worlds in Collision which outraged
the scientific community with its sometimes sloppy science; astromomer Carlo
Sagan pointed out that his claims, particularly that Jupiter ejected a comet
which became Venus, violated principles of Newtonian dynamics, laws of conservation
of energy and angular momentum. Recently discoveries do suggest a role for
comets and meteors in the evolution of life on Earth.
Frederick Loewe 1904-1988
born in Vienna, Austria; died in Palm Springs,
California Feb. 14, 1988; composer; a child prodigy on piano, he wrote a

York restaurants; 1942 teamed up with lyricist Alan Jay Lerner and wrote
a series of hit musical plays, including their first hit Brigadoon (1947),
Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956; filmed 1964), Gigi (film, 1958),
and Camelot (1960).

daughter of the manager of the local movie theater; died in London, England
June 22, 1969; singer, actress; at age two, she and her older sisters started
singing between movies up on the stage accompanied by their mother; the family
moved to California and the girls took the show on the road, changing their
name to the Garland Sisters; 1939 at age 17 picked to play Dorothy in The
Wizard of Oz; 1939 her recording of Over the Rainbow sold over a million
copies; other musical roles include A Star Is Born, Easter Parade, Meet Me
In St. Louis; married to David Rose, Vincente Minnelli & Sid Luft; mother

New York Daily News, Maxwell Communications Corp., Mirror Group of Newspapers;
after his mysterious drowning, it was found that he had looted the pension
plans of his companies to prop up his debt-ridden businesses.
Edward O. Wilson 1929-
born in Birmingham, Alabama; biologist, the
world's leading authority on ants; best known as a proponent of sociobiology,
the study of the genetic basis of the social behaviour of animals, including
humans. In his new book, Consilience, he argues that nature organizes everything
in the world by a small number of natural laws that comprise the principles
governing every branch of learning Quote: "Homo sapiens, the first truly
free species, is about to decommission natural selection, the force that
made us.... Soon we must look deep within ourselves and decide what we wish
to become."
