Tomaso Albinoni 1671-1750

born in Venice Italy, eldest son of a wealthy paper merchant; died there Jan. 17, 1750; composer and contemporary of Vivaldi; when his father died, his brothers took charge of the family business, and he became a full-time musician, and ran a successful academy of singing; wrote 53 operas and 54 concertos; best known for his Adagio in G-minor, the Adagio of Giazotto, apparently based on a genuine fragment by Albinoni himself.

  

Robert Schumann 1810-1856

born in Zwickau, Saxony, Germany; died at Endenich, near Bonn; Romantic composer; 1834 founded the New Journal for Music and served as its editor for nine years; 1835 fell in love with his former piano teacher's daughter, Clara Wieck, who was only sixteen; her father opposed the union, but they persevered, married in 1840 and had eight children; early 1840s started to suffer from manic depression and psychosis; 1854 attempted suicide, and was committed to an asylum in Bonn, where he died at age 46; best known for piano pieces (many written for Clara) and the song (lieder) cycles Frauenliebe und Leben and Dichterliebe

  

John Everett Millais 1829-1896

born in Southampton, Hampshire; died in London Aug. 13, 1896; painter, illustrator; a child prodigy, entered the Royal Academy Schools at age 11, and exhibited at the RA from age 17; friends first with Holman Hunt, then Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and the three founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. Franklin King 1848-1911

born near Whitewater, Wisconsin; died in Madison Aug. 4, 1911; scientist, invented the cylindrical tower silo, and a gravity system of ventilation for dairy barns widely used before farmers got electric blowers.

    

Frank Lloyd Wright 1867-1959

born at Richland Center, Wisconsin; Phoenix, Arizona; architect, writer, developer of the Prairie Style of residential design; studied engineering at the University of Wisconsin, then moved to Chicago to work as a draftsman, designing in his spare time a few houses for some of his boss's clients. He called them his "bootlegged houses" his prairie style features low, sweeping rooflines hanging over window walls; with massive brick or stone fireplaces at the heart of the house. John W. Campbell 1910-1971

born in Newark, New Jersey; died in Mountainside July 11, 1971; science-fiction writer, publisher; a master at predicting future advances in science; 1930 his story When the Atoms Failed has the first depiction of modern computers; in the late 1930s took over a little adventure-pulp magazine called Astounding Stories, and started publishing writers like Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein; changed its name to Analog and it became the leading science fiction magazine; during World War II his stories about atomic energy were so accurate the FBI had him investigated.

Francis Crick 1916-

born in Northampton, England; biophysicist; awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with James Watson and Maurice Wilkins, for their determination of the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the molecule responsible for the hereditary control of life.

Sara Peretsky 1947-

born in Ames, Iowa, grew up in Lawrence, Kansas; got her doctorate in history from the University of Chicago; went into marketing but was an avid mystery reader, and decided to try her hand; 1982 published her first novel, Indemnity Only, with fiction's first feminist private investigator, Victoria Iphigenia Warshawski; currently nine books in the V. I. Warshawski series.
