Paul Gauguin 1848-1903

born in Paris, France; raised in Lima, Peru by his French journalist father and Peruvian mother; died in Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands May 8 or 9, 1903; Postimpressionist painter; 1865 joined the French merchant navy, travelling around the world for six years; 1872 became a Paris stockbroker and a Sunday painter; 1874 influenced by the Impressionists' first exhibition; 1883 lost his job and took up full time painting at Pont-Aven and with Vincent van Gogh in Arles; 1891 abandoned his wife and five children and left France for Tahiti to paint; died of syphilis and morphine addiction. Imre Nagy 1896-1958

born in Kaposvár, Hungary; died in Budapest June 16, 1958; politician, Premier of the 1956 revolutionary government; his attempt to establish Hungarian independence from the Soviet Union led to an invasion of his country and cost him his life.

Jessica Tandy 1909-1994

born in London, England; died in Easton, Connecticut Sept. 11, 1994; stage, screen, and TV actress; best known for Tony award-winning performances as Blanche DuBois in Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire (1947) and in The Gin Game (1978) and Foxfire (1982, with second husband Hume Cronyn); also played in The Fourposter (with Cronyn, 1951), Five Finger Exercise (1959), A Delicate Balance (with Cronyn, 1966), and Rose (1981); recent films include Driving Miss Daisy (1989, Oscar) and Fried Green Tomatoes (1992); also earned a law degree in 1974.

Brooks Stevens 1911-1995

born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; died there -- Jan 4, 1995; industrial designer; best known for designing the 1949 Harley-Davidson motorcycle; other products include the Jeep Wagoneer and the Excalibur motor car.

James Ivory 1928-

born in Berkeley, California; producer, director; best known for making quality films on shoestring budgets; began career as a documentary filmmaker; 1963 teamed up with Indian producer Ismail Merchant, as proteges of Satyajit Ray, to make The Householder, based on a novel by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala; other Indian films include Shakespeare Wallah (1965), about a family of British touring actors, Bombay Talkie (1970) and Heat and Dust (1983); also known for adaptations of literary classics such as The Europeans (1979), The Bostonians (1984) , A Room With a View (1985), Maurice (1987), Howards End (1992, which won three Oscars for Best Actress - Emma Thompson - Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Art Direction) and The Remains of the Day (1993)

Tom Jones 1940-

born in Pontypridd, Wales; singer; started career in London clubs; 1965 first big hit was It's Not Unusual, written by his manager, Gordon Mills; other hits include the title song from the Peter O'Toole movie, What's New Pussycat?; Green, Green Grass of Home; Delilah; Love Me Tonight; became a big act in Las Vegas, and had his own network TV show for 3 seasons; recently recorded a I Want You Back, duet with Tori Amos.

Liam Neeson 1952-

born William Neeson in Ballymena, Northern Ireland; actor; a champion boxer in his teenage years; studied science at Queens College, Belfast; 1976 joined the Lyric Players Theatre in Belfast; 1978 joined the repertory company of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin; 1980 spotted by John Boorman playing Lennie in John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men and cast him in his Arthurian sage Excalibur; starred with Natasha Richardson on Broadway in the revival of Anna Christie; among his 20 films, he has played the title role in Ethan Frome, Schindler's List, Rob Roy and Michael Collins; recently in the screen adaptation of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables in the role of Jean Valjean; also starred as Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn in the George Lucas Star Wars film, The Phantom Menace.

Prince 1958-

born Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis, Minnesota to a jazz singer mother and a jazz pianist father; rock musician, actor; The Artist Formerly Known As Prince (and as TAFKAP or The Artist, or the symbol O+>), known for his playful, sexy lyrics; first hit was I Wanna Be Your Lover from Prince, his second album; films include Purple Rain, Under the Cherry Moon, and Grafitti Bridge; has recently written an album of children's songs with his wife; his 1999 album, with the single of the same name, was the major rock anthem for New Year's Eve 2000.
