Headline Birthdays for June 5

Thomas Chippendale 1718-1799

baptized in Yorkshire, England; died in London in 1799; furniture maker, author of The Gentleman & Cabinet Maker's Director, which illustrated almost every style of mid-18th-century domestic furniture; 1753 opened his showrooms in St. Martin's Lane, London, where he and his son designed and built neoclassical mahogany furniture; their name has become generic for that style.

Adam Smith 1723-1790

baptised at Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland; died in Edinburgh July 17, 1790; political economist; studied at Glasgow and Balliol College, Oxford; 1751 appointed professor of logic at Glasgow; 1759 published The Theory of Moral Sentiments, which looked at social institutions and the standards of ethical conduct that hold society together; 1776 moved to London; 1778 appointed commissioner of customs in Edinburgh; best known for An Inquiry into the nature and causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776), which examined wealth and the division of labor, the function of markets, and the international implications of free trade and a laissez-faire economy; argued that the price system solves the economic problem efficiently without conscious direction, and the state should refrain from interfering with the economic life of a nation except for limited functions (defense, justice, certain public works). While the French Physiocrats believed that society should be reorganized from the top down, Smith believed that it should be from the bottom up. He saw no moral good in selfishness but did see the dangers of self-interest. Quote:: "People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices."
Some other famous Smith quotes:
"Every individual endeavors to employ his capital so that its produce may be of greatest value. He generally neither intends to promote the public interest, nor knows how much he is promoting it. He intends only his own security, only his own gain. And he is led by an invisible hand to promote an end which was no part of his intention. By pursuing his own interest he frequently promotes that of society more effectively than when he really intends to promote it."
"All money is a matter of belief."
"The real price of everything, what everything really costs to the man who wants to acquire it, is the toil and trouble of acquiring it."

Francisco 'Pancho' Villa 1878-1923

born Doroteo Aranga at Hacienda de Río Grande, San Juan del Río, Mexico; assassinated in Parral June 20, 1923; revolutionary, guerrilla leader; at age 15, shot a man trying to rape his sister, and escaped into the Sierra Madre; 1910 in the Mexican Revolution, offered his services to rebel leader Francisco Madero against dictators Diaz and Huerta, escaped to the US and got backing from General Pershing; 1914 gained control of northern Mexico in the civil war against Carranza; 1915 lost the Battle of Celaya, and US support; March 9th 1916 crossed the US border with about 600 men and raided Columbus, New Mexico, killing 17 Americans; Pershing led 150,000 troops in a Punitive Expedition against him, but Carranza demanded the retreat of US troops from Mexican soil; 1920 after the overthrow of Carranza, Villa lay down his arms in exchange for land and amnesty, and retired to a ranch in Chihuahua.

John Maynard Keynes 1883-1946

Dennis Gabor 1900-1979

born at Budapest, Hungary; died in London, England Feb. 8, 1979; electrical engineer; 1947 developed the theory of holography while working to improve the resolution of an electron microscope, coining the term hologram from the Greek words holos, meaning "whole," and gramma, meaning "message"; suggested that the wavefront emanating from each point of a scene could be recorded by causing it to interfere with a background wave, converting phase difference into an intensity difference; the wavefront could be reconstructed by illuminating the recorded information with coherent light; to be practical, his theory needed a source of coherent light, which came with the invention of the laser; 1971 won the Nobel Prize for Physics for his invention of holography, a system of lenseless, three-dimensional laser photography.

Richard Scarry 1919-1994

born in Boston, Massachusetts; died in Gstaad, Switzerland April 30, 1994; children's author, illustrator; knwn for his oversized picture books, with characters including Huckle, Lowly Worm, Sergeant Murphy, Mayor Fox and Farmer Goat; books include Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, Richard Scarry's Please & Thank You Book.
