died in Breslau, Silesia Nov.16, 1831; soldier, military strategist; joined
the Prussian army at age 12 and by 14 was a commissioned officer and a veteran
of the Rhine campaign against the French Revolutionary Army; 1801 admitted
to the War College in Berlin, where he studied military science under General
Gerhard von Scharnhorst, who developed the modern general staff system; 1812
resigned to serve, along with other Germans, in the Russian Army against
Napoleon; 1815 chief of an army corps during the Waterloo campaign; 1818-30

which advocated the concept of total war, in which all the enemy's territory,
property, and citizens are attacked without limits; published by his widow
in 1832. Quote: "War is not an end in itself: it is a way of carrying out
political action by other means... To impose our will on the enemy is its
object. To secure that object we must render the enemy powerless; and that,
in theory, is the true aim of warfare.... But move from the abstract to the
real world, and the whole thing looks very different."

of the Midwest, first to Winter Quarters, Nebraska, to settle in over 300

24, 1847, and set up the church's headquarters in Salt Lake City; built other
colonies throughout Utah and in the neighboring Arizona, Nevada and Idaho
territories; 1851 became Governor and superintendant of Indian Affairs of
the new territory of Utah; 1852 announced that plural marriage, or polygamy,
was a basic tenet of the church; 1857 President James Buchanan sent an army
into Utah to suppress his power; 1858 reconciled with the federal government,
